Curriculum Intention
At Thoresby we believe mathematics is an essential skill for life. We are committed to ensuring that pupils recognise the importance of maths in the wider world and give them the mathematical skills and knowledge they can apply in a range of different contexts, including their future employment and adulthood.
We believe all pupils should experience success in the subject, even when at times it may be challenging. Our maths curriculum takes into careful consideration the demographics of our school and challenges any negative perceptions that persist around the ability to learn, understand and enjoy everyday maths.
Pupils need to be fluent in the fundamentals of maths. It is essential they are able to reason mathematically, identify relationships and patterns whilst developing their mathematical language. This enables them to explain and justify their mathematical thinking.
Daily maths lessons follow a structure that includes vocabulary development, oral rehearsal, partner work and independent work. The school uses the mastery approach to teach mathematics, which ensures that all pupils have a secure knowledge of the fundamentals of the subject over time.
We follow the Effective Maths programme, the key features being;
- Mastery
- Procedural fluency and conceptual understanding
- Variation
- Mathematical patterns, relationships and connections.
Mathematical talk is also a key feature in all lessons, encouraging children to explore mathematical concepts and reason logically.
In order to secure multiplication fluency, pupils are taught multiplication tables discretely in addition to the daily maths lessons. These lessons are supported with weekly tests and opportunities to further consolidate their learning at home through TT Rock Stars and other materials.
We aim to have a community of confident mathematicians, who are fluent in the fundamentals of maths with the conceptual understanding and ability to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately. They are able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of situations with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios. Pupils are able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
