Character Education

Building and developing the children’s character skills (together with their academic skills) is of great importance to us at Thoresby and is an integeral part of what we do. Our key values and restorative practices form the basis of the children’s character journey and allow them to fill their Thoresby backpack with a wide range of skills and experiences to prepare them for the next stage of their learning and beyond.

We are proud to have been chosen as the the DFE Character Awards winner in 2016 and more recently, following an external assessment we have been awarded with the Schools of Character Kitemark Plus award.

The assessors noted:

‘It was a real pleasure to meet with a cross section of the student population who were able to speak with confidence and eloquence about their experiences at the school. These students were able to relate the character education programme to their own development and understood very clearly how it influenced the high quality relationships which exist at all levels within the school community. It was particularly rewarding to listen to young people who were able to describe their own journey and development at the school and the various interactions and activities which had enabled them to develop as independent and emotionally stronger individuals, able to self-evaluate at a relatively sophisticated level. Even the youngest students understood the need to make the “right choices” and they were able to articulate how they are actively encouraged to consider values and the needs of others when arriving at the best course of action.’
